Mission Bay Kiosk

Toka Parawhau / Bastion Point tells the story of the the Bastion Rock, since demolished, and Orakei Basin, which was formed by wet phreatomagmatic eruptions about 120,000 years ago. It erupted near the junction of Purewa and Waiatarua Creeks that had short valleys carved into the underlying Waitemata Sandstones. The area is significant in New Zealand history.

This piece acknowledges Mataaho and the kōrero behind the ahi called on from Hawaiki to warm The whenua of Tāmaki Makaurau and its iconic volcanic landscape.
Rangitoto is the prominent motu (volcanic island) seen from ridgeline and has a hononga (connection) to one name given to this area. The rich volcanic soils made for good māra kai, cultivation grounds necessary for a thriving pā and people. Depicted are two kaitiaki named Rangitoto nui and Rangitoto iti.
